San Juan Totolzintla is at the end of the road on the south side of the Rio Balsas. A new bridge and paved road some miles before the town now allows easier access to the villlage. Essencially traditional costume has disapeared from the town and a style of peasant wear has replaced it.

As tou can see on the older map , it shows no road into the town, infact it doesn't even show the town. I found the town orderly , the people surprised and a bit suspicious but had no problems taking some photos here.

This is a view across the river , the town there is San Fransisco a mask and wood carving town.

Droping down into the town on the right in this photo you can see a new school. The area is heavily deforested.

Here we see two women , one on the left wearing the more traditional peasant wear and on the right more modern dress. Both are palm weavers. On the right the women holds palm braids and under her arm the palm the she is weaving.

The woman was wearing her reboso and traditional apron she had just sold her palm strands or "trensas" braids before the photo.

This lady asked to have her photo taken after she saw me photo the first woman.

I always try and take a picture of the name of the town , so latter I can identify it if I lose me note book and get the spelling of the name correct. Maps in Mexico can have the names wrong or misspelled. Well so can I...
